I recently put a 4.0 in my ranger. The PO rolled his truck with the motor in it. Would that cause the rear main seal to go out? He went through the top end after he rolled it and re did all the gaskets. I'm guessing he didn't pull the motor out to look at the rear.

Possiblely. Just depends how bad he damaged the truck. If nothing got into the engine, than you'll be fine. To be safe, I would replace it just in case if something goes bad when your going down the road. Inspect the transmission, clutch, flywheel, and anything else that doesn't look right or bent. If it don't look right, you might as well fix it. Was the front end rebuilt? If not, it wouldn't be bad to do that. Check your front and rear axle. See if the gears need to be replaced. Or it wouldn't be bad to upgrade them either. See if the drive shaft is bent or check your U-joints.

I know some of these don't include the engine, but my friend was recently in a wreck and I helped him fix it up. That was most of the stuff that was broken when he rolled it. It's good to inspect it thoroughly and fix some of that stuff. It could save your life.

Why didn't you just put a rear main in it while you had it out?

I've never had one go out before so I didn't know what to look for. I've only done one other swap, and a friend of mine helped me rebuild the motor we put in. I've noticed it's leaking oil when I turn off the truck. Haven't really seen anything while the truck's been on.

And I just took the motor from the truck, nothing else. Thanks for all the suggestions though, bigtruck94

The rear main is one of those seals that is so hard to get at most people just replace it while they are there, even if it isn't leaking yet.

Learn something every day I guess. It's not leaking terribly, so it'll do for now. I'm looking for another M5OD that doesn't leak, so if I swap that in, I'll fix it then.
