I am replacing some worn rocker arms on my 4.0 and was wondering if you need to replace the pin that is on the end of the rocker shaft that is behind the spring? I went to my Ford dealer and was told the part is obsolete. Has anyone just reused the pin? Any danger it will fall out if you reuse it? If someone knows of an alternate source please let me know too. I could not find it on Rock Auto or anywhere else that I looked.

Thanks

I think I reused mine. Its been a while, and I have only had the rocker shaft apart once, so my memory may be a tad off, but isn't it just a roll pin?

yeah that is all it is. If I could get a size could probably get one at a hardware store or something I guess or maybe just reuse it and not worry about it..

Well if you take them out correctly you wont' destroy the middle. That will get you a width, and then the length should just be enough to go through both pieces.

I have never run into issues from reusing a roll pin, unless I did a good deal of damage taking it out.

It's a judgement call. You should be able to re-use it. But pay attention to how easily it fits back into the hole. If there isn't much resistance, then replace it with new. If proper sized new pin doesn't fit, then the hole should be drilled to accept the next larger size of pin.

There are hardware sources online that you can order roll pins from. Not sure if you'll find them at Lowe's, etc.

I reused mine, as long as they hammer in somewhat tight I wouldn’t hesitate. If anything u could match them up at the local hardware store and get some new roll pins.

Go to parkrose/ace. They have everything.

I reused my pins. I used a punch to remove them and drive them in again.

Like you, I was a bit worried if they would stay in place with all the vibration and such, but I had to take my valve covers off again after 3000 miles and they hadn't budged at all.
