Ok, here is the Deal. I got my ranger recently cuz my DD went down and got this thing cheap. I had to get it running which was a lot of work since it sat for 4 years. After we got it running I had a broken rocker retainer spring and a rocker kicked off number 2 cylinder. Once i Got that fixed I adjusted the rockers tighter cuz it ticked. After that and bout 2 50 mile oil changes and some aditives, not much had happened, then all of a sudden it quieted down to bearable, but every once in a while it almost goes complelely away, but when it does, it runs like crap. I was wondering if I could have adjusted the rockers to tight and when the lifters prime properly, it hold the valve open slightly to leak alittle bit?

Other thing is, what could it be that when it drops under 1200 rpm's I loose oil pressure on the gauge, but and still getting oil to the top of the engine?

The rockers are self adjusting as it has hydraulic lifters.

And the oil 'pressure; gauge on the dash is nothing more than an idiot gauge, don't believe it. Get yourself a mechanical gauge and put it on it to see what the oil pressure is actually doing.

Something else that you might want to consider is removing both sets of rocker assemblies. Take them apart but remember the order they came apart in and thoroughly clean the inside of them. A higher mileage engine will sometimes have a good layer of "mung" built up in the bottom of them. You will have to remove the plugs at either end to do this. After that is done I also enlarged the oil hole both top and bottom and also chamfered the oil holes. It worked wonders on mine for top end lubrication. To remove the plugs you will have to drill and small hole in them and thread a screw into it and then pry them out carefully. I made my own aluminum plugs to go back in or you could buy new plugs to replace them. Re-assemble the rocker shafts and roll on. Hope this helps you out some and good luck. Keep us posted.
