My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
I posted this in entertainment, because it is just a thought, and maybe just a dream lol...

I noticed a lot of us use and suggest/refer Rock Auto to others. We probably provide them a lot of business.

Maybe we can band together and get some love back from them in the form a TRS member discount? Show our member status somehow or a discount code or something...

Like this one?

Like this one?

Literally JUST ordered a bunch of A/C stuff from them, that code is expired, this one works:

They rotate codes, 5% off which usually puts a good dent in the shipping.

The rock auto 5% discount is pretty easy to get. Every time you order something they give you a code that lasts about a month, if you don't have one, it's easy to find one.

I would be more impressed with a 7% discount.

True - my link was just to the whole RockAuto section of TRS. Apparently the expired code is in the section description so it came up in the link preview. I'll go update it.

Yeah that caught me, "hey where's my discount!" so I had to back and dig for a newer one.

Now I'm confused - I swear I had access to edit that before, but can't figure out where to do it today.

They have also donated coupons for events in the past. Jim handed out a bunch in Ohio 2vyears ago. Can't remember if he had any last year.

If you want more freebies, I could clean all the RockAuto magnets off my lockers and hand them out. I know I'll get more in the future.

This is entertaining.

Who has a new code? this one expired last week.

Every time I tried to use them for a list of parts... their shipping charges were from 3 or 4 different warehouses. I just couldn't see paying for all the shipping from different locations when all the parts could easily fit into a single box for much cheaper. Parts weren't much cheaper... and shipping negated any savings.

I also hate their stupid commercial... so not entertaining to me.

They actually donated to this years trail ride and I got drawn for a $25 gift card. I passed and then got drawn for a pair of Midland radios.

I may have to try to buy some parts again from there... I have a list building for the Bronco... I see several of you folks like using them.

I always shop around on big stuff, cheaper to find something for $50/$75 more, but with free shipping. A lot of times if you can save on shipping if you try and buy everything of one brand, they will also tell you if things are shipping from the same location.

I got screwed by Rockauto a few years back and that’s been about the end of my business with them. They are my last choice when I need something that can’t be sourced elsewhere or can’t be sourced for a reasonable price.

Somewhere on here should be an old thread about it but basically I had bought rear tie rods for mom’s 02 Explorer. When I placed the order, there was nothing in the listing specifying the rim size or anything and they were about the only place I could find them (apparently only 02 and 03 used this particular design). It took me a month or two to get the time to work on it. Got them changed over, went to back up the Explorer and POP-hissssss. Tie rods rotated slightly and punched a hole in BOTH back rims.

Scratched my head, went back on Rockauto and pulled up the tie rods to find the description had changed to “only fits 17” or larger rim”. Well crap. I’ve got 16” rims and I wouldn’t have bought them if that was on there when I ordered but of course I never did a screenshot or anything when I ordered. Dunno if it’s changed, but at the time they did not have a customer service department to contact, just an email, which basically told me that it’s past the 30 day return period and I should have read the listing better anyway (I did and wouldn’t have ordered them if it would have said it doesn’t fit the rims that came on the Explorer). So we were out the cost of the new tie rods which don’t do us any good, plus new tie rods (Dorman is the only one making them and I got verification on the correct ones through Dorman, which we’re miss-listed at Autozone but since I had the correct part numbers from Dorman…), and a pair of rims plus mounting and balancing.

So yeah, Rockauto can kiss my rusty. :temper::flipoff:

I go to RA first, get the price with shipping, THEN go over to Amazon and see if I can get it cheaper with free shipping.

RockAuto has been good to me for the most part. A handful of orders have been messed up but the vast majority have worked out fine. Every single brick and mortar parts store has screwed me at least once as well, it happens when you deal with fixing your own stuff.

Bottom line: if you are willing to fix your own stuff, you must be extra cautious with the process and be prepared to live with the results. If that is not acceptable, take your car to a mechanic.
