My 96 Ranger 4.0 sucks up gas like crazy and has no power, why? Is it just geared so low?

Hard to say. Give us some more info. Auto or manual? What mpg are you currently getting? When have you last done any preventive maintenance like new plugs, clean the MAF, new fuel filter, etc.? What air pressure do you run in the tires? Give us a but more history and info.

It's a Ext. Can 4x4, has 180,000. I've put a hi flow air filter, new exhaust,02 sensor's.it idles and runs fine it's just giving me about 12- 13 mpg.

I also had a tune up, new wires and plugs. I do have 31" Hercules tires running 40 psi. Cleaned MAF

That's really not THAT abnormal for an automatic 4x4 4.0. City rating is only 15mpg, with bigger tires 13mpg would be about right.

Could check for codes and take a look at the fuel trims to see if anything is off.

Thanks, I appreciate your input!
