Roaring noise, got some play in this part - what is it?

Oh just to follow up on this in case someone else reads it later & has the same problem.. it was the wheel bearing/cv part pictured at the top of this page (2). Replaced that and the noise instantly went away. It took about 2 hours to replace. The hardest part was forking over $180 for the part.

silly noob question. Does a 94 4x4 front end have these hubs?

You can often save a ton of cash by going to a dedicated industrial bearing place. The moment I need a bearing that's where I go and they always sell me an American made product (Federal Mogul or SKF) for way less than it costs at the auto parts store. Here the bearing supply sells bearings for vessel repair and they won't sell you any cheapo chino stuff. You wouldn't want your ship breaking down 1000 miles out from land now would you?

I've learned my lesson about cheap parts for sure. I've gotten two axle seals and a slave cylinder from parts master that were bad right out of the box. Now I use Timken for bearings and seals and FoMoCo parts when it comes to slave cylinders and other stuff. Its worth the few extra bucks not to have to do a job twice in a week.

Well, if it is the bearing...you will want to change it asap...that is the main cause for losing the front tires...once they collapse or otherwise disintigrate your wheel will be riding right on the spindle and it will sheer that nut off in no time...and then you will need to replace the spindle...which is NOT a fun job...

My '02 Mazda B4000 4x4 has started making a loud rumbling, roaring noise in the last month or two. It sounds a little like having mud tires, and gets louder at certain speed ranges like around 25-35 and 65-75.

Jacked the back end up and found no play in the rear wheel bearings. The rear U joint is tight.

Found some play in this part of the rear drive shaft, but I don't know what it is called. Is this a easily serviceable part?
