I need to know how to swap out a ring and pinion. I don't need to know it great great detail, But if anyone can tell me whatever I need besides the ring and pinion, and the general steps so I can get a good Idea of whats going on.

FYI- I have a 7.5"/3.73 and I wanna put 4.56s

Changing gears isn't quantum physics but unless one lucks out incredibly it does require a few special tools and a bit of training.

So far, I understand that you take of the drums, pull the axels out, then do somethin with the gears, then set the backlash, and... what not... Idunno

From how it sounds you may be better off having a shop do it, if you don't get it perfect, your gears will blow up 10 miles down the road...

But if you really want to do it, look for some articles for setting up backlash, shimming, pre-loading bearings, pinion depth and all that junk...

Take your time and do it right:icon_thumby:

Do a lot of research before starting (technical section of this site is a good start). When I bought my gears last year, I also got the instruction dvd for $10, it had the step by step instructions for doing the gear swap, best $10 ever. Just make sure you have all the tools before you start.

sorry, double post.

where did you get that dvd for the gears i would like to get me one about to do my gears to

Yo,
Ring and pinion swaps and Automatic transmission rebuilds. Those two things give me shivers.

Get another complete axle assy. and the dvd. Play with it until you're absolutely positive it's right, swap out, save your original as a spare in case it wasn't. 4.56s in a 7 1/2" are going to be a little weak since the pinion will be so small.

I've been buying gear sets from Randy's Ring and Pinion for about 4 years now. I only buy one gear set and that is Yukon Gears. The gear set has instructions as well as pictures of correct gear mesh pattern and back lash tolerances. You are looking at about $300 bucks to have it shipped to your door, and that comes with the gear set, install kit and shipping. Just remember you are going to need and inch pound dial torque wrench, a good breaker bar with a pipe so you can crush the crush sleeve and a dial indicator to set your back lash. If you are doing a used gear have it magnafluxed before you install it as it may be cracked. If you are doing a used gear say something and I will post the directions from my book that I have.

I don't need to know it great great detail,

YES, you DO need it in absolute detail. And you have to get every one of them just right or your brand new 4.56s won't last the first drive to the corner grocery store (and may not make it out of the driveway).

You should take this to someone who has done it successfully at least several times before.

If you have to ask these questions you're probably not ready to do this. You will need precision tools-i.d.&o.d. micrometers or caliper, dial indicator, cheesecutter puller & press or torch, an induction bearing heater is nice, good high quality socket set and possibly other tools as well. If you're only doing this one time you would only want to borrow or rent them. A simple mistake could cost you another set of bearings during assembly. Not catching that mistake could cost you the whole enchilada. 1 way to do it right and 100 ways to do it wrong. If you're not very mechanically inclined, good math skills and familiar with precision measurements it could be a very expensive learning experience. If anything goes wrong it will cost double or triple having a professional do it right the first time. If you think you're qualified to learn this do as I suggested earlier. Good Luck!

One of the things I like about Yukon Gears is their detailed installation instructions.
