Got an hour?
So it all started on a 94' 4x4 ranger. It wouldn't shift into 2nd unless i let off on the gas otherwise it shifted like a dream. After getting quotes of $2000 dollars, I decided it might be a good father son project. We took the pan off and the "A" stud from the center band was lying in the pan, no... I repeat no shavings whatsoever. Also saw the "anchor" side was loose. Broken band right? No, after pulling the tranny and taking it apart, all bands intact, a little crispy, but nothing to write home about. I don't know what I'm looking for either thou. What could have caused this? Maybe from a flush? The tranny is spotless! So now that I'm in here, can anyone tell me what things I should definetly replace? I'm just a carpenter, but I have been taking alot of pictures during tear down. Your threads and advice have been priceless! You guys amaze me?
1. If I don't take the pump off do I still have to "align" it?
2. Should we do a shift kit?
3. Should we replace the servos?

Was the band adjustment nut on the outside tight? If not the adjuster can back off allowing the band strut to fall out. Would explain why it wouldn't shift unless you backed off the throttle.

No as long as you didn't disassemble the pump.
2. Should we do a shift kit?
Yes
3. Should we replace the servos?
Yes and replace the bands as well. Gone this far , might as well overhaul the whole thing.
