Revisting rusty 2.0.....with VIDEO...

I was able to get a video of rusty 2.0 in a mild fit of flooding/acting up. Very mild....

.

You hear it flooding/bogging as soon as i let off the throttle? This was also accompinied by dubious amounts of rich smoke. Then it hesistates when you hit the throttle and comes back strong. Truck was at temp when this video was taken.

Heres another funny thing, when i first fired it up the engine sounded like it doea right before it starts losing power and wanting to die. Its running smoothly but not quite as "robust" as it should.. It then ran out of gas.


Dumped gas in it continued this for a few minutes then smoothed back out.

My question is....why does it act lean, but also rich? I havent tried unplugging the O2 yet, thats the next step.

Is it possible for a low pressure pump to get hot and quit working? Or for an injector to respond slowly?

I dont know.

I was wondering that too.

I know it has a lean code, and that the O2 sensor has been replaced. What else has been done, replaced, and checked since this started. This has gone on for so long that I need a recap.

Have you ever checked your injectors? Most of my past problems with my 2.9 were due to injectors after the truck sat for a while (I had a company truck, and rarely drove mine for over a year). To make matters worse, I put in a "rebuilt" set of injectors I bought off eBay (after completely rebuilding everything else in the fuel system did nothing), only to discover later that one of them was randomly sticking wide open (I discovered this when I bench tested them). I finally got fed up and bought a new set of Accel injectors, and it runs a lot better now. I've been working on vehicles since I was a teen, but never had any real experience with fuel injection. I learned the hard way this time around. I believe it was adsm08 that at least once mentioned how bad ethanol is on these older vehicles, and I think that's where the problems with my '87 began. I'm hoping that Lucas Ethanol Fuel Conditioner actually works .

The smoke appears to be coming from rusty... Not the truck.

I shoulda added...the smoke was oil cooking off the manifolds. Didnt think it really showed up in the video.

No i havent messed with the injectors yet.

I have checked/replaced...

MAP.
ECT.
IAT.
Fuel pressure.
Vaccuum.
New plugs/wires/rotor/cap.
EGR valve.
EGR sensor.
TPS.
Frame mounted fuel pump.

I think thats all.

I'm not sure I gained much insight to the problem from that video... other then you need to seal up the valve covers.

I'm with adsm... not even sure where it all began...

Have you ever Seafoamed that beast?

It was snowin here to lol.

I dumped some sea foam in the fuel at one point, and fogged the upper intake, no difference.

Is there some sort of do it yourself injector cleaning kit that hooks to the schrader valve?

This thing did sit a very long time before i got it.

As for the valve covers, im not even worried at this point. It only smokes that bad when it doesnt get run for a while. When i DD'ed it they stayed burnt off. My 77 does it to.

Yes... we're suppose to get 6 inches. The way it's been coming down for the past couple hours... I would say they might have underestimated the accumulation. On the plus side of things... I get to see how well the new Dick Cepek Trail Country EXP's work in some heavy wet snow.
