rev limiter?

This is a Mazda B3000 automatic, with a question.

With the truck is in park, and ideling, it runs fine. When i press the gas pedal, the RPM's go up to 3000, and then starts pulsing, shaking the hole car with refusal to go any higher.

Is this a buildt in rev limiter, or is there something wrong?




I have also had a stall issue, where the truck stalls at completely random times and surcumstances. I have changed the fuel filter, ran some injector cleaner in the tank, and I have also changed the Fuel inertia Switch, but havent had a chance to go get stranded again...

Not sure the two issues are related in way?

it should be a rev limiter to prevent such abuse.

pretty much all newer cars have it.

well with an automatic in park it has a rev limiter set to 3000 cause why would you need to go over that at all when in park. the pulse and shake is the truck beating on the rev limiter, shame on you, what has the truck done to you to to deserve this abuse. What happens before the truck stalls, does it usually do it while coasting or when accel or decel? need a bit more info if you got it

Thanks, that is good to hear that it's a design, not a flaw. And a bit of healthy abuse never hurt anyone!
I am more familiar with old 5 speed and 4 cylinders, pretty different form new v6 auto!

The stalling is then not related. And I suppose it has stalled more times on inclines, but nothing steep, for sure not. But stop go traffic on slight inclines has given result twice.. the woman stalled it the other times. I believe it has to do with the Fuel inertia switch, the old one had the ohm meter all over the place, and the one i got from the wreckers has a steady reading...

That must mean something, no?

The IAC is located under the throttle body, i guess?

thats a good assumption and it is right around the throttle body. hopefully it is fixed

Yes! Lets hope so. The only way to find out is to go and get stuck with a stalled out car again!

Another question, is related to the towing of this mazda, it's no good for the transmission or what is the deal there? we had to yank it out of some silly places, whats the dangers of towing it?

My 4.0 is limited at about 5200 rpm I believe but is manual.Hard to believe a automagic is limtted to 3000 in park.

if you make sure to put it in neutral and your tranny doesn't slip around then it should be fine but any distance put it atleast on a dolly. and yea my 5speed lets the engine go to 5500ish. but it doesn't have that switch to let the computer know when it is in park for starting and such.

Never flat tow an automatic. Remove the driveshaft before towing, or tow with the rear wheels off the ground. The trans isn't pumping or circulating fluid when the engine is turned off, so the parts spinning inside will not be lubricated and it will burn up.

And yes, the engine is limited to 3k rpm in park. In drive, the limiter goes up to approx 5500 rpm.

What exbass said. Flat towing an auto will burn it up unless you pull the d-shaft, have a manual t-case that you put in N, or let the engine run. If you are stuck in a hole and you yank it out you won't break anything.

What are the signs of something burned in the transmission?

I still havent driven any after our last little tow,
good time to change some fluids in the tranny before driving any more?

Really appreciate the help, I have a 4runner (5speed, 22re) i am very familiar with, but this is all a bit new to me.. got the haynes book, so i'm not afraid of having a go, but it's
not much on transmission in there. And most of that is take it to a professional.
