rev limiter?

Ford makes a flat tow kit for our trucks, puts the t-case in neutral. Hit up your dealer and ask about it.

transmission burned?

Well, lets say it's too late for that now....

What kind of damage is likely form towing a few k?

How can i tell if something is burned in there?

Should i at least flush and change the lube in the transmission and hope?

or is it too late, and i have stabbed myself in the neck with this?

Don't have much experience with flat towing but even Ford says some is okay. From a 2005 Ranger owner's guide, for flat towing automatic transmission trucks:

• Release the parking brake.
• Turn the key in the ignition to the OFF/UNLOCKED position.
• Place the transmission in N (Neutral).
• Do not exceed a distance of 50 miles (80 km).
• Do not exceed 35 mph (56 km/h) vehicle speed.
• Put 4x4 switch in 2WD mode (4x4 only)
• The vehicle must be towed in the forward position to ensure no
damage is done to the internal transfer case components.
If a distance of 50 miles (80 km) or a speed of 35 mph (56 km/h) must
be exceeded, you must disconnect the front (4x4 only) and rear
driveshafts.

The deal is that the automatic transmission is lubricated by a pump that is only running when the engine (transmission input side) is turning. So towing it flat you are turning transmission components (like the output bearing) without feeding them lube.

I don't think changing the fluid would help, HOWEVER I always recommend that you change trans fluid every 30-40k miles anyway as part of regular maintenance. So, if it's been 30k or more since the last fluid change, then yes, change it.

And simply don't tow it again like that and try not to worry about it. What's done is done, all you can do now is hope that it isn't damaged and try not to lose sleep over it.

My 4.0 is limited at about 5200 rpm I believe but is manual.Hard to believe a automagic is limtted to 3000 in park.

i got a 99 ford ranger xlt 5spd 3.0 and i dont have rev limiter.. i can red line all day and not blow anything =D

i got bunch on performance parts in there as well.. ALL Forged internals and headers cai and bunch of other stuff

Thanks guys, thats pretty much what I was hoping for.

If it blows up, it blows up, eh?

I'll lube it all round, then have a go.
cheers!

Right Ho!

Then blow the bally bastard up with some lovely gunpower, what?

To right!

if you make sure to put it in neutral and your tranny doesn't slip around then it should be fine but any distance put it atleast on a dolly. and yea my 5speed lets the engine go to 5500ish. but it doesn't have that switch to let the computer know when it is in park for starting and such.

I accept with information: The trans isn't pumping or circulating fluid when the engine is turned off, so the parts spinning inside will not be lubricated and it will burn up.
