I can't seem to find it, thought I read it somewhere..

Is it necessary to have TO bearing retracted so it's less of a fight to get the input shaft into the spline?

jus wonnering :)

Strictly speaking the throw out bearing doesn't retract. The slave cylinder does.

If you have a brand new empty slave on the trans, which should not be the case for you, then the slave should compress on it's own.

If you have the slave pre-bled and filled with fluid, which you should do before installing any of your hydraulics since holding the whole thing assembled and upside down is about the only way to bleed a Ranger clutch, then it does help to have the bleeder cracked open a bit to let the slave compress.

I have also had good luck getting very long bolts that batch the trans bolts and use them to get things lined up and drawn in.

Have the trans supported and connect the clutch line before you "stap the shaft in and the "problem" will be self correcting...

If the slave is full of fluid the only place it can go is back up the line through the master and back to the reservoir...

thanks gentlemen, It may not be a problem anyway. We may be going with the donor engine too which means the 98 engine and trans will go together then into the truck. (less Tcase that comes off first and back on after, (of course)

Get a hold of a clutch alignment tool. Eliminates a problem. My stuff was all brand new From the crankshaft out. Regardless , I put a dab of grease on the tip of the input shaft and made sure the splines were clean and shiny. I'm in no where near good enough shape to push the transmission in like I used to. Instead I used small lengths of 2x4. I would rock it and put a 2X under the front. Then lift the back and put one there. Rinse and repeat. It took a few tries to get a process down. It took me 45 minutes start to finish to put the 5 spd in the Rat. But I didn't hurt myself either. :D

thanks all . we will of course have long bolts with heads cut off. and the new clutch will come with the alignment tool I'm sure.
