Does the engine need to come out to replace the oil pan gasket?

Yes. You can spend 8-10 hours busting your knuckles to without removing the motor to try and replace it or a good solid 6-8 hours to remove the engine and replace whats needed and reinstalling.

Thanks for the reply. Thats insane. Do you think if I loosened the transmission, transfer case, and engine mounts it could be lifted high enough without removing. Its a 90 ranger 4x4. Thanks.

I did that and wasnt any easier for me. The pump sits to low in the pan and theres no easy way to get it under that.

Besides, with the motor out, you can replace anything else with ease!

What would I recommed? Vavle cover gaskets and a rearmain. Why not, you have the room, and its so easy to get to!

Also a VERY good time to check the clutch and slave!

Well, that don't sound good...I've been reading up getting ready to swap out my busted oil pump shaft and according to the haynes book, the distributor gets pulled, exhaust and motor mounts unhooked, and that gives enough room to raise the motor high enough to pull the pan without removing the motor from the truck. But...since you have to pretty much unhook everything else anyway, guess it might be just as easy to go ahead and pull it...

well i did it the hard way,,left the motor in,,,,,what a pain in the butt,,,wanted to change oil pump,,i did it but was not fun!! distributer does not have to come out,,,but cap needs to come off,,and put aside,,,,engine mount nuts off anf jack all the way up as high as you can watching out for distributer on firewall,,,had to loosen exhaust to allow for eng tip,,,then barely had enough room so slip pan of after removing pickup for pump by feel,,took 2 6-8 hr days,,,never again! motor out! is the way to go
