So I've been wanting to get some different sound out of my truck, since I've finally put to rest the engine squeak. I've heard good things about Thrush Welded mufflers and how they are pretty much identical to a Flowmaster 40. Is this what everyone is talking about?

And are these difficult to put in? Do these bolt in or do you weld them in? I know it's probably painfully obvious, but if you don't ask you don't learn :D

i have heard good stuff about the thrush mufflers..don't have one though. My buddy has one on his 99 grand am v6 ram air and it sounds pretty decent. I have a Flowmaster muffler and i like it very much..good decent sound to it; though i have heard great stuff about magnaflow as well. Its all about personal preference i suppose :dunno: as to the install; welding is def. the sure way to make it near impossible to weld; i have mine just clamped on and its doing just dandy. :icon_cheers:

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. So you think clamping it would be just fine? I can do either, but the less work the better.

And aren't the stock pipes for my '99 2 inches? I can't seem to find any mufflers with that size, do I need to buy a different one and just adapt it?

That's the one! I have one on my 4.0BII and it sounds good.

You can buy adapters to increase or decrease your pipe size from auto parts stores.

You could either adapt a muffler or replace the piping. Generally a smaller diameter pipe will give off a higher raspier note and a larger pipe (or a long larger tip at the end) will give it a lower muscle note.

My friend has a 4.0L lowered with a body kit and such, he's running a Midas turbo muffler with a single 2.5" pipe all the way back and it comes through his roll pan with a 4 " tip. It really impressed me. It wasn't obnoxiously loud or ricy at all. Had a beautiful mellow note that would hint to a V8 rumble at idle. I myself run a flo-pro SIDO with 2.5" pipe and dual 12"x3.5" rolled tips and it too has a distinct "feel it in your chest" note when I get on it and its still subtle when I cruise or drive normally.
