I have a '98 ranger with the Mazda M50D-R1 trans in it. i have 120,000 on it and drive 300 miles to school and back like once or twice a month. It is starting to slip and squeal. i am going to replace the clutch in it soon. i am going to be getting a clutch kit. (you know whats in it) is there anything else that i might need or will run into that needs replacing? also is this a hard job. i know it will be a little time consuming. i have done clutches before but never in a ranger truck.

thanks joe

It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the slave cylinder while you're in there since it would suck to have that go out and need to pull the tranny again to get at it. It's not too bad to do, although it's easier to access the bellhousing bolts if you have a body lift. That would make dropping the transmission easier as well. Some people like to separate the t-case from the transmission, and/or take off the exhaust y-pipe, but I have done neither in the 3 or 4 times I have had the transmission out of mine (the FM146 I have is a little different than the Mazda, but my buddy with a 94 has done the same).

I just did the same thing for the same reason. Got the transfer case off, but couldn't get the y-pipe off, which meant the transmission put up a good fight comin out, but i did get it all done in probably a total of 20 hours, which includes several hours bleeding the slave cylinder, which is probably the hardest part.

clutch work

all good points I have a 94 ranger 4.0 I replaced the slave cylinder, input seal, and rear seal, I also had to replace the tubing from rez to the slave cylinder. I left the y pipe in place I made a cover out of pexiglass for the top of the transmission so I could turn the trans so I didn't have to remove the y pipe. also since you are there it would be a good time to replace the oil in the t case, everything I did took a little under 15 hours

Thanks i am going to get it done here in the next few weeks. whenever i have a good weekend to start and finish. what is a good brand to buy and where is the best place to get it. also you should use a atf fluid in that trans right?
thanks again, joe

LuK makes the stock clutch kits, and most aftermarket kits are just reboxed LuK kits.

For fluid use Mercon/DexronIII.

If you plan to pull your y-pipe, get some PB blaster and spray down the bolt a few times a day until you're ready to pull the tranny. You will be glad you did.

Yeah. I know that trick. All i need is to torque off a bolt. I am going to try to do it without unbolting the y-pipe. We will see how it goes.
