My clutch blew after only two years this time and I think it was the slave (there is fluid everywhere). So now I am going to replace the whole clutch kit by myself (never having tried) with Haynes Manual. Any suggestions from those who have done this (best way to drop the t-case or tranny)? Anything else worth replacing while I have the tranny out? I can take pictures of the process if anyone thinks it's worth a how-to thread.

If you are pulling the trans/transfer case by yourself, get the $60.00 transmission jack from Harbour Freight or on the internet. It makes the job easier, safer, and you will have the jack for any future work.

Also search TRS for the numerous threads on pulling transmission and changing clutches.

yeah, i've been searching threads for months. I've looked at so many threads I have vague memories of things people recommended but I can't find them in forum anymore.

Get a Chilton"s manual and the trans jack and you will be good to go. Any questions that come up you can post on TRS and get a quick response. If I could do it, you can do it.

Haynes said I needed to jack the engine because the oil pan could bend. Is this necessary?

I just did the clutch replacement this past weekend. I would look at the flywheel (maybe get replaced) and replace the pilot bearing. Go ahead and drain the transmission fluid and replace it. Get a set of ratcheting wrenches I could not have gotten to the top few bolts without them.

You will prob need someone to help you bleed the clutch. It is kind of a pain.

Yeah, I bought a clutch kit (has the slave, alignment tool, pilot bearing) and flywheel. Should I drain the Tranny fluid before pulling it?

Yeah drain it before you start and leave it empty until your done. (just dont forget to refill before ya test drive it) If you dont want to spend the money on the tranny jack just get a 2x4 lay it across the trans hump inside the cab an use a ratchet strap or chain around the trans and through the hole onto the 2x4 to support it and slide it back.

eBay. Cheapo stage II. I was curious what a "racing" clutch would feel like. I don't care if it lasts, I really just wanted to learn to change the clutch myself instead of paying someone $800 in labor.

How's that racing clutch working out for you? Seems like it'd be a lot stiffer.

Clutchplate, disc, release bearing and new flywheel

alignment tool, pilot bearing and included o-rings (i guess the large metal one is a flywheel shim?)
