Hey guys I'm at wits end. 97 ranger 2.3. The truck starts and then dies and then sometimes it stays running but runs rough. It's so intermittent. Idle will spike high for a while then instantly go back to spuddering. Cleaned Mass air,new IAC,new 02 sensors, cleaning the TB in a ultrasonic cleaner. Also checked for any vacuum leaks. Checked valve in EGR. Codes throw p1130, p1409, p1506, p0122, p1100. I have replaced and tested everything I can. So I'm leaning towards recessed valves. But no misfire code. Not sure what to do now.

P0122Throttle/Petal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input

P1100Mass Air Flow Sensor Intermittent

P1130Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch – Adaptive Fuel Limit – Bank No. 1

P1409EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Circuit

P1506Idle Air Control Overspeed Error

That's quite the eclectic list. Most of them are circuit codes. Have you been running with things unplugged? If so clear codes and drive it a few miles and read them again.

Yeah I cleared them. Today I'm messing with the IAC again. It's has 12.4 volts to it and it ohms out at 10.2 but when I unplug it it makes no difference in idle. Took intake off and checked everything for vacuum leaks and everything seems fine. It will run ok at high rpm but as soon as I turn the idle screw down it will spudder and die. Evey sensor checks out or has the correct volts and ohms. Seen the post about the recessed valves but I want to be absolutely sure before I jump into that.

There is no idle screw like you would find on a carburetor. I don't remember the details but you shouldn't play with that. There is a procedure to set it right again but I don't remember.

Oh ok. I just turned it to keep it running to do some tests. It won't stay running if I don't. When I do turn it ,it will rev up and spudder over and over again.

Cleared codes and ran it for a few and p0102 and p1506 popped up.

P0102 is MAF Circuit Low Input (Gotta be the MAF or wiring to it at this point.)

P1506 is most likely a misadjusted throttle stop or vacuum leak. (I guess it could be related to the MAF problem if it's VERY wrong...)

Thanks senornoob! I'm gonna get a maf sensor and see. I'll post back what the findings are.
