I'm doing a brake job on my 94 4x2 and replacing the rotors and putting in new inner and outer bearings. The bearings come with matched races. Do I need to use the races that came with the bearings and knock out the ones in the new rotors or will the ones in the new rotors work just fine? What do you guys think? Thanks..

For what it would take...I would knock them out and install the ones that came with your bearings.

Okay..makes sense to me. Have you or anyone else just used the ones that come with the rotors? Any down side to doing it that way..just for reference?

They could be made by different manufacturers...might be a little bit different from each other resulting in bearing noise and possible early failure.

when i did mine I bought new bearings and rotors at advance auto.........when i investigated it as i was doing the work. I looked at the numbers etc on the back of the race in the rotor ..it was the same as the race that came with te bearings........I thought you needed an hydraulic press to install/remove the races from the rotors?

I didn't change them out on my 2wd.

I did set the replacement bearing in them and really looked it over for any differences, and couldn't find any. Several thousand miles now, so far so good.

i never remove the races. always worked for me to use the race in the new rotor. from what I've seen, all that crap is made in china now so you never know what you're getting :icon_rofl:

No, you just need a hammer and a flat headed screw driver, lol.

Never replaced the race in a brand new rotor in my life (when I started working on cars as a teenager nearly all still have bearings/hubs in the rotor and that was one reason to turn them. The races are new, no need, the races that can with the bearings are not a match set. Now when replacing bearings in a used rotor, 50/ 50. If I do not see any wear marks or damage maybe. As a usual I used to replace bearings at each pad change (used to be able to get 50 or 60 k miles on a set of pads.

I could see knocking bearings out like that, but when reinstalling them, always use a soft drift (brass, aluminum, copper) or a tool specifically designed for it, or you risk damaging the race.
