after you help or hinder a post, people can add positive or negative feedback to your "reputation". a high reputation means a lot of people think your very helpful. a low reputation...not so much with the helpfulness.

Or people aren't aware of it and don't give you anything. I usually try to give people credit when due.
Also, you get additional Rep when you for every certain number of posts.
