The two bolts that secure the thermostat housing to the block seem to be blocked. One is blocked by the alternator bracket, which is so close to it, I can't get a socket on it. The other is blocked by the timing belt cover.

Did you have to remove the alternator and bracket and also the timing belt cover? Please tell me that is not the case.

The instructions don't say anything about having to take that stuff off. You may just need to use a wrench instead of a socket.

I remember having to take the timing belt cover off when I changed my thermostat. On the timing cover, there are a couple of phillips screws and a couple of 10 mm bolts (yours may be different, mine is an 85) and I just kind of wiggled it out of there and it was a little tricky but definitely made that thermostat housing bolt easier to get to.
