OK so I am trying to remove my 4R55E transmission from my Ranger. I tried to get it out without taking the Y pipe out but finally gave up. I broke / loosened the bolts on the collars at the exhaust manifold end but am having problems with the studs that go to the catalytic converter (see pictures). The bolts just stripped off so I ground off the one I could get access to with a grinder. I have beat on what is left with a punch and tried an air hammer punch but nothing will break the other end free. Is this thing press fit very hard into the flange on the other side? I tried soaking them in PBlaster for now to see if that will help. I'm also not sure if I have enough room to get access to the upper bolts with a grinder. Thanks for any suggestions.

I removed mine but it's been about 4 years ago now. I'm pretty sure the flange itself isn't threaded, but are the nuts welded to the flange maybe? Anyway, a reciprocating saw (sawzall) with a metal cutting blade should work on the top ones. It's just the bolts that hold it together, there's no press fit, but you might need to loosen some of the hangers towards the rear to separate it.

I just pulled mine off. I soaked them in penetrating oil and let then set over night. But I also pulled the whole exhaust out.

I had to drill them out in order to get them out.

OK Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I may have to drill mine out.

You're yanking the trans anyway, unbolt at the flange after the cat and remove it as a unit when you take the trans crossmember out, cut off the two remaining studs, remove cat, then drive out the remainder of the studs with a hammer.
