Hope this is the right forum...

I have a 2001 Ranger 4x4.
I have to replace the excluder (dust) seals on the CV shafts.

The manual recommends a 'CV Joint remover/puller'...
Has anyone used these before?

Do I really need this special tool? And if so, which one will fit my Ranger?
There seems to be a few different 'forks' out there, but I'm not sure which one to get.

I did one CV job before on a different car and all I used was a large screwdriver to pop the shaft out of the transmission. I'm not sure if I can get away with the same on my Ranger. I've never had it apart.

Thanks,

Just pry it out with a prybar or whatever is handy, it'll work

Thanks for your reply...

I received my parts today and my hub puller.

The instructions that came with the seals says to use these special tools to install them:

Seal installer (T81P-3504-M2) and Seal Remover guide (T81P-3504-E)

Can I just make these tools? I work in a machine shop, so I can make just about anything I need. The tools look like a straight piece of tubing. If I knew the OD and ID, I could make them.

Or if they are cheap enough, I'd just buy the tools... question is.. where can a person buy them?

Thanks,

SJ

Just use a screw drive to get the old seal off. Use a 3/8 extension, use the flat flat to put the new seal on with a hammer. Thats all you need to replace this. No need to waste hours making tools or spending money on something you dont need.

I've been known to use pipe and/or conduit connectors from the hardware store when I needed something cheap and flat to pound on.

Thanks for the replies...

After some extensive searching, I couldn't find the 'Ford' tools anyway so I'll just do it the old fashioned way... make it up as I go :derisive:

I found something interesting while I pulled one of the excluder seals out tonight:

My hub didn't have any of these 'retaining rings'.
According to the invoice from the dealer who replaced them last, they charged the warranty company for 2 of these rings:

F8Z7-3B457-AA

Is my truck supposed to have these rings? My manual doesn't mention them at all. I'm hoping someone that has actually worked on a 2001 can confirm.
