I have never been able to work out how to remove these %^&*%^&* buttons. I need to remove the interior panels of my '98 Ranger to get at some wiring.

You can get a removal tool that slides under the head there and pry it out. It's just a push in fastener so it pulls right out. I usually use a pocket knife, or two, slide the blade(s) under head and twist up.

I used an old flat crescent wrench, filed the front edges down to slide it in easier and bent the handle a bit

small prybar, screw driver

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! I probably won't get a chance to try anything until Thursday since I have band practice tomorrow.

needle nose pliers work too. if you use any tool there is the possiblitly of scratching the plastic so if you care about your kick panel use vacuum line or just rubber or vinyl hose over whatever tool you pick. push the kick plate in slightly around the interior pin to get a little bit more room to grab the pin

the tool mentioned about thats made to remove these is GREAT. fairly cheap and can be bought at most automotive stores.
