I am in the process of removing my 4.0L from my 97 ranger which has a 5 speed manual tranny. I am leaving transmission in place when removing engine. Question is can i get motor high enough to pick up off motor mounts (removed nuts on top) while still connected to tranny and then able to move forward to separate from trans? I am afraid I will run out of room with floor before I can get motor up off motor mount studs? Do I have to remove bottom nut and totally remove the mounts? Cause I think the stud on the bottom is shorter? Also, where should I hook my load leveler to? bolt thru head holes in each end of engine?

Edit: It is 4x4

Thanks,
Dan

The engine can be removed from the vehicle with the trans in place if the rad is taken out. It will be tight, and it will be much easier if you take the fan off too. It will be much easier to put back together if the trans is removed though.

As for how to hook up, go to Tractor Supply, find the sets of blue 1200LB test ratchet straps, they run about $10. Remove the upper intake manifold and then tie onto the exhaust with two of them. Set it up so they cross over the center going from port 1 to port 6 and port 4 to port 3. Works very well.

Yeah motor is pretty much bare....removed radiator, all accessories on engine are gone as well. Removed all pulleys back to bare water pump on front. What about the motor mounts though? Can I leave the mounts attached to the frame and still get motor up high enough to clear studs and still pull forward? I think the bell housing is going to hit firewall before I can get high enough to clear motor mount studs...

P.S. I am leaving the transmission in the truck.

You will clear the mounts and the firewall. You will want to loosen the trans mount nuts so that it can flop around a bit without putting tons of undue stress on the mount.

Speaking from my own experience with swapping engines, both at the shop and at home, it is possible to put the engine back in and get everything lined up while leaving the trans in the vehicle. It is MUCH MUCH easier to just take it out though. I tried to do it your way when I put an engine in my truck a few months ago. 2 weeks later I was still kicking myself for being stubborn and not just taking it out in the first place.

I left my tranny in place when I swapped to my 4.0. Had the radiator removed, but didnt remove the fan, which ended up being the only problem. I bent it pulling it out. But I had the one out and the other in and bolted up in a couple hours.
