So I'm moving to Dallas this fall for school. Does anyone know if I will have to register my truck in Texas since I will only be there 1 year. Also I have read that it would have to pass inspection, will my straight pipes affect whether it passes or not? If I don't get it registered and keep a Tennessee tag will they pull me over for the straight pipes? If you were wondering I'm going to Universal Technical Institute in Dallas for diesel mechanics. Any help on this situation is appreciated. Thanks

i woudnt think you would have to register your truck in texas, alot of out of staters here in college keep their home state tags, as for the straigh tpipes i would assume its city to city wether they will pull u for them or not, google dallas texas exhaust/noise ordinance laws should give ya some info

Wont need to register in texas enless u move there permanent

You can keep it registered where it currently is if that's where your address is.

I know people with homes in two provinces. And they register in the cheaper one.

You are likely to attract attetion with loud pipes and an out of state plate. And the other thing you can't do much about. DWY. Driving while young. I know I'm an old fart and a major buzz kill, but I would add mufflers and keep the truck registered in TN. :D

thanks for the replies. My computers charger bit the dust and finally got it fixed. I'm thinking about putting Flowmaster Super 40s on it just so they can say anything.

They probably won't even notice your truck except for the TN registration and plates. Outside of suburbia, Dallas cops are more worried about staying alive and major crimes than whether someone's vehicle is too loud...now if it smokes like a diesel locomotive and the pipes drag the ground, it might be a different story. Does TN require an inspection sticker/brake and light sticker? TX does so they'll be looking for a registration sticker and a inspection sticker on your windshield until they notice your TN plates.

So are you selling your place and moving to Dallas to go to school, or are you moving out of mom and dad's house and moving into a dorm/apartment in Dallas while going to school?

If the former then you will definitely need to register the truck in TX at some point, or your tags and registration will expire with no way to renew them. As long as you or family still own the place you are living now, then that can be considered your primary residence and you can use that for tag and registration purposes. At least that's the way it is here in Georgia.

If you do go the register/license it in Tejas route, be prepared...$15 for inspection sticker, $60-$75 for registration/tags and the mandatory $200 new Texan fee to boot (you pay the crooked Gov for deciding to reside there). If you're keeping a residence/address back home, just keep your registration there updated and insurance, too, and the cops will leave you alone since you are a student...they may stop you, but you're a student/non-resident so not much they can do about that...otherwise you have something like 30-60 days to complete the Tejas registration process, I forget which.
