I have a small dilemma that I need some help with. I am receiving 2-3 vehicles in trade for some stuff I have. I have every intention of selling them all as soon as I get the titles.

The problem is that I do not want to spend $40/vehicle putting plates on them, but I need them to be legal so people can test drive them. I don't have a dealer's license either so I can't use dealer plates.

The other part of this is that South Dakota allows you to keep the plates and registration from cars you sell, and transfer them to other vehicles, but I plan on reducing the size of my fleet so I really don't want to have a bunch of extra sets of plates.

I guess I should probably just talk to the DMV, but thought that I'd get some insight here first... somebody has to have run into this before.

in california, you can get temporary registrations. wich they give you a pice of paper u tape to ur window so you can drive the car around. most people here get them cause they failed smog and need to take it to get it fixed

Most states can give you a temp registration, they do it here in tennesee too, But technically, why register them? How far do you plan on letting people go on a test drive? I wouldnt bother, as far as ahving extra plates laying around. You can turn them in and the tag office will give you a credit for your next plate, they might even credit it towards the next registration. The tag office themselves would be the best ones to ask questions.

Not very far. I'll call the DMV.

just leave the titles open man. dont sign them.

I would but it is illegal to do that in SD. I got in trouble for title skipping once before I knew better and got away with a warning so I don't want to do it again.

Fyi:

Here in TN if you buy, register, & sell more than 4 vehicles in a year, you are considered a DEALER, and will have to purchase DEALER TAGS which are $750 yr.

My Son's BIL found this out the hard way, he was buyin, swapin, sellin vehicles, and when he went to tag his 5th, they told him he had to purchase a DEALER TAG @ $750 or wait out the 5 months for his year anniversary of the 1st vehicle.

So, I'd recommend as stated above to see what SD laws are and are they enforced?

GOOD LUCK!

BTW: TN only issues "Drive Out" tags to licensed DEALERS..........you can't go the the local county clerk and get them. I have asked, you also can't transfer a vehicle into your name with out taggin it, payin sales tax on it, and insurin it.
