My '83 Ranger is stock.....2wd, TK5 transmission, and the wheels are 14 inch.

The gearing is 3.45.....not bad for level highway. However, I basically stay in town and sometimes pull a 1,500-2,000 lbs. trailer.

I was thinking going with 3.73 which would still be alright for highway, but better for pulling. 4.10 was a thought as well and would be great for towing....but probably crappy for highway.

Any ideas here.....this truck runs awesome....but HATES any incline.

The 3.73 are good for towing from everybody I have heard from. But also you have an OD trans so that will help with the highway rpms. If your wanting to do a direct swap, do the ranger 8.8. Stronger ring and pinion gears and spider gears. The 7.5 spiders are made from heated and compressed powered metal. You may not notice much of a difference between your current gearing and what you want though. The 4.10s will make it easier on your clutch for taking off.

There's a gear calculator in the tech library that will help you out based on what rpms you want to run and your tires size you want to run that will help you decide.

I'd say 4.10... but it really depends on tire size.

you won't notice MUCH difference on one step of gear. i.e. 3.45 to 3.73, is not a lot of difference.
