Regear pattern help!

Hey guys, I am regearing but I think I am overthinking everything. First off, used a Ratech tool to get pinion CD depth and that was a complete fail. So, I just used a 30/1000 spacer and away we went with pattern running.

From what I can gather, this pattern indicated too close of a pinion correct? Stock shim was 23/1000, maybe thats the next step. Just looking for opinions of people who have expereince in this.

Nice clear pictures

Looks like you're real close.
Maybe see if it improves with a .003" thinner pinion shim. If not, I'd say go ahead and run it.

What are ya'll looking at? I see no appreciable difference between the 2 pictures.

Shape of the contact pattern on the gear tooth (the darker area where the yellow grease is wiped away). The first two pics show a straight sharp edge at the bottom (root) of the gear tooth, the 2nd two pics the contact area is more spread-out (oval-ish shape).

Look up in the Axle FAQ Sticky about halfway down, there should be some links to pages about what is involved in setting up axle gears if you're curious about it.

I always 2nd guess and redid it another 4 times with these results. I think these are the best so far. Opinions?

Might be just a tiny bit deep still (0.002 maybe? it's reeeal close). I'd say it's probably fine to run though (it has good tooth coverage).
I've been told just a tiny bit deep can actually be good for high-torque applications (the pattern tends to "walk" up & out on the tooth under load).

yea, I think I am going to run these... every other time it is off... I have read as well that you do want it towards the toe because when you put pressure on it it will creep towards the heel.... im only a 3.0 (a torque MONSTER, i know ).

I do feel best about this one, just wanted reassurance. Thanks Junkie!


Now to just rip them apart and do final installation. And then of course, actually get them in the truck.

Yes, I used a new bearing (exact one that came out of the kit) and bored it out a little bit. This was the final setup, what do you guys think?

Pattern is great. Sure you want the backlash out to .011"? Is that the spec for your gears? I know Motive recommends .007"-.009".

By the way, did you have a gorilla help you put the pressure on to get that nice pattern?

BL on the ring itself (Richmond) said 0.010 and to stick within 0.004 so thats why I landed there. It's already closer to toe so I am ok with it and hopefully they arent noisy or I get a clunk.

Yea, carrier was a little rough to get turning after it was all put together lol. I actually spun it via the axle (with the locker locked) and held the pinion with a towel. Def was not easy. Got the same pattern after final install as compared to test install (just ring and pinion) so I figured it is good to go.

Now, the fun of installing it. With new AALs. Plan on taking the bed off and sanding down frame and undercaoting, replacing fuel filler neck (it just started leaking), replacing rear leaf shackle mounts, etc. Should be a blast but much easier to do all at once.
