Well 3rd gear and reverse are almost completly out of my 99. im not even gonna screw around with the VB and such until i get it out and im just gonna do a complete rebuild.
any suggestions or things i need to watch for in the 4R44E?
Thanks

Yes, you have to take the valvebody off to get at the 5mm allen bolt that holds the centersupport in, also the input speed sensor wire from the support plugs in under the plug that holds all of the solenoid wires. Reverse uses the 3rd gear clutch and the rear band. Make sure that you have a good manual at hand when you do this.

Hey, I am new here to the ranger scene, and was told that the 4r44e was a very "crappy" transmission. If it should go, would it be better to swap in a better trans? Or would it be best to install a heavy duty shift/rebuild kit?

The only "better Trans" would be a M5ODR1 and that is a manual, im thinking about selling the truck so im not going deal with the conversion.

I just got my manual today in today.

What does the swap entail? I'd like to convert to manual as well so long as there is no cutting/fabrication involved.

you would have to cut a hole for the shifter, you would need a clutch pilot bearing clutch pedal assembly, and probally alot more.
