Rebuilding a M5OD-R1

My truck's transmission has some issues shifting into 1st from neutral some times. Could the synchros be going? Would a rebuild solve this issue? Because I'm am taking classes at the local technical college and coming up in the fall we are going to have a chance to rebuild transmissions. Should I just rebuild or replace it? If I'm going to rebuild where could one find a rebuild kit?
