rebuild 1354 with parts from newer

So the newer (1998) T-case that is on the M50D I just obtained is not going to work on my older truck that has the speedo cable connected to the older T-case.

The T-case doesn't look terribly complicated to "rebuild" So, before I decide to sell the newer one. Does it make sense to use the newer one to "replace the internal parts? My older one seems ok except for a very slight play in the output bearing to the rear drive shaft.

I don't have personal experience rebuilding t-cases. However I've read that they are the same with the newer ones having a 6 gear planatary [?terminology?] compared to a 4 gear on the older. I think plumcrazy did this. Use the "google custom search" button top of page right side, it works better than the native search function.

Cool.. would the 98 be considered "newer"? Hope to have it off the transmission today (10/27)

I think what I"m trying to find out is if the cases will interchange so I can have the speedo drive gear on the newer case

Well I should know this weekend we are going to remove the newer from the transmission and get under my truck and do some real scrutinizing before starting the project. Tech pages seem to indicate the speedo drive hole is there and has a plug.
