im kinda turning my truck into a semi prerunner. we dont have dunes up here in ny but i have countless miles of dirt roads and some small gravel pits. well anyways i want to flip my rear shackle so i get some more travel. anyone know what shock and length i should use if i use the factory springs? eventually i may upgrade to exploder springs and what lenghts would i use then. what kind of travel increase would i be looking at?

Not sure about the shocks but you could still use the shocks you bought when you swap to explorer springs

flip your shackles, grab a set of chevy 64" leafs, and run the shocks you have. that should keep you right where you are.

you can fit around a 10" shock under the bed i think. easiest way is to measure once you've put the springs on. droop the rear suspension all the way out then measure the distance from upper to lower mount, and then the same for bump.

that would be bad for the shocks. it would add a lot more travel to the rear which is a lot more than the shocks can handle. and the ruined too short shocks would limit my travel anyways.

with stock or expo springs and flipped shackles you wont really pull anymore travel then you are now and if you do its just going to separate the pack or negative arch it something awesome. your really just changing the way that it cycles for about 2" or 3" and wont gain any extra travel so anything beyond stock shocks like smoothies or resi's would be way way overkill unless you plan to upgrade to nationals or deavers, if your keeping the stock mounting points i wouldnt bother either since 1 shock is behind the axle and the angles are going to negate alot of usefulness of a upgraded shock.

edit p.s. i like your firetiger paint scheme on your avatar if i saw a mini painted like a needlefish lure id do something unmentionable to own it

Iam from NY too but long island, not many dirt roads down here but some sand pits that we try and play in. Anyway i might have went a little over kill for not having any dunes anywhere but i just went with the deaver long travel leafs with king shock with a shock tower i built my self. i dont know how much u want to spend but it was like 500 for the leafs and 700 for the shocks but with the 4x4 long travel front end from dixon bros it was well worth it. dont expect to get anything from them fast but good products. i can put this truck 4 feet in the air and it lands like a pillow. I get about 17 inchs of rear travel.

Not really all true somewhat yes but when flipping your shackles it lets you get more droop before your springs start to separate. you wont gain a whole lot but when I did it to a friend of mines truck he gained about 4inches of droop. I am not sure on your fab skills but there is a few ways you can gain travel and not loose and space in your bed catilever "spelling sorry" a bit pricey and difficult to set up but really the best way to gain travel and still keep your bed. Also ive done it once had a expo axel in the back so im not sure if it will work on a stock width rear end but you can build a hoop on the outer edge of the frame in the wheel well and put shock tabs on the spring plates giving you the ability to run a 12inch shock. Plus it will put your shocks closer to the wheel and give you a better damping affect. either way id suggest going to 64inch chevy leafs or deavers get f31s though g50 pack will be way to stiff on a truck like that.

What deaver pack are you using?

flipped shackle you lose 2-3 inches height. chev 64" you gain 2-3 inches.

but take advise from the guys with 4 posts on here. because i know nothing about building or customizing a 2wd...

:annoyed:

your parts dont work with his. he has a 98 IFS, you have an 84. his will work on 97-05 depending on package. yours work from 83-91

ask the right people, you get the right answers.

what exactly are you saying?

what exactly are you saying?

he has a 1998. it has IFS or independent front suspension. you if your 2wd should have either TIB (twin I beam) or if your 4x4, TTB (twin traction beam).

what im saying is, asking him what he uses wont help you, because the trucks are so different weight wise and size wise. your best bet would be a bed cage with a set of deaver's G50's. i am gonna assume he is running F31's which will probably be to light for your truck. gotta remember its not how it sits but how it lands. for shocks if you have the money order some fox bypass or saw's.

up front, are you 2wd or 4x4? i can recomend a couple for both.

2wd i'd go for Blitzkrieg Motorsports

for 4x4, id go for autofab. theres isnt as much for 4x4's unless you get custom made beams and fab your own shock mounts and bed cage.

but remember to have fun with it! :icon_welder:

Not trying to be rude but what does the front suspension have anything to do with the leafs in the rear? deaver makes common 2 packs for rangers g50 and f31. And that goes from 1983-2001 it doesnt matter what front suspension you have yes a 4wd is heavier but that weight doesnt translate very much to what leaf pack you run I have a friend with a 99 ranger dixon kit up front and f31s with 16in 2.5 smooth body kings thing runs amazing lands perfect he had g50s on the rear and it was way too stiff no matter what the valving was set at the leaf pack was just too stiff no valving in the world is going to compensate for that. g50s and f31s give you about the same amount of lift just g50s are for more weight behind the axel fuel cell spares and so on. I have a custom pack I put together my self on my ranger running 2.5 16in foas running a bypass isnt needed really proper tuning with a smooth body will get great performance not as good as a bypass but will still get the job done perfectly fine ive had my truck 10 feet in the air multiple times and have yet not been more than satisfied with the landing. when I do decide to go to deavers it will be a custom g50 pack because even with all the weight I have its not enough for a full g50 pack. I use one spare and a fuel cell mounted behind the cab not over the axel. Ive spent almost every weekend around prerunners for 2 years most of which have been rangers and unless you have damn near a full blown race truck g50s are just too much leaf. I build all my own parts have put together multiple ranger builds. but if your going to go with a company there is alot out there that put out top notch stuff giant and camburg being in my opinion the best. dixon bros would be right up there too.

i would say get a set of f31s for the rear no matter what. the g50 pack is intended for trucks that carry a lot of weight (spares tires, big fuel tank, cage work, other race spares). smooth body 2.5 shocks with a remote or piggyback reservoir can work well without having to plunk down the 1k for bypasses, tuning helps more than you can imagine. i'd prefer kings if it were me, not because they're sikkk bro, but because i deal with them a lot and they're great people. call kellan @ king when you're ready for shocks, tell him mac @ blitz sent you and see if he can cut you a bit of a deal, or give you some tuning advice.

but i will also x2 the blitzkrieg comment, they do offer a beam kit that isn't listed on the site as well as the kingpin beam kit. they have several different hub options, and can set you up with a whole package deal as a one stop shop.

exactly I dont even think I have enough weight to use g50s thats with a 28gal cell tube work in the rear and a spare. on a full race load possibly with extra tools and a drive shaft back there but I dont race just a play truck so the tools stay at camp thats what radios are for lol.
