Have 2001 3.0 with 88,000 miles and a leaking rear seal, I think. How big a job is it and how much might it cost in a shop?

Oil is dripping from between the trans and rear of engine at back of pan. It is not coming from a loose filter, and the rest of the pan seems dry.

Thanks

big. the transmission has to come out. if its a stick, i'd do a clutch job while your in there.

how much oil are you loosing between oil changes? if its less then a quart, i wouldnt worry about the seal just yet...its not worth the cost.

ya thats exactly what is goin on with my truck i couldnt not figure out that it was but mine is leaking in that spot to, but im only loosing like ummmm maybe a tablespoon or less and day if it just sits there?? i was told that it might be coming from the oil pressure sensor up the back passenger side of the engine but it doesnt look like its coming from up top its at the bottom

could that be my real seal goin?? my truck is a 94 b3000 with a 3L and it just had a new clutch put in about 2 years ago a performance clutch if that helps any help wuld be greatly appreciated

so im guessin its alot of work to change the rear seal

how much do seals cost and what to i have to do to change it? like i kno i have to take the tranny out but once i get that out what do i have to do?

Is the fluid coming off your trans red or dark like oil? If it's dark it may be the seal. You have to pull the trans, remove the flywheel, then pick the seal out. Put a new one in and put everything back together again.

If it's red then it's ATF and you need to find the drip from the trans itself. Clean it off well with brake cleaner and then watch over a couple of days where the drip runs from.

The easiest part by far is going to be replacing the seal itself.

The hardest part will be the time involved in removing everything just in order to get to the stupid thing. I just went through this about two weeks ago and had to replace the front main seal twice because once I got everything in the new front seal I got was bad out of the box and was leaking.

Went to NAPA and bought a new one to the tune of $15 bucks and it has'nt leaked since.

Here's the picture of my new rear main I got in the lower engine gasket conversion set:

ya its not red its dark engine oil cuz my trans is leaking to from the back by the transfer case but ya im guessin its my rear seal

is there any way to check if its leaking from there without taking it all apart??

so a rear seal will only run me like ....20$$ i have time to do it cuz i have an automotive tech class from 8 to 1045 every weekday morning with a hoist to do it

To make sure it is from there I would do as described above:

Get under it with a can of brake/carb cleaner, wear your safety goggles and go to town on the drivers side of the engine. Get it real nice and clean.

Shortly after a drive or two you will be better able to pinpoint where it's coming from. It would be sad to rip it apart only to find out it's leaking somewhere else.

Yes the rear seal is only $20 bucks. Can be less if you shop around.

Rear Seal Leak Repair

I posted earlier I have a rear seal leak. I know it is a big job I am not up to. Anyone venture a guess as to how much it would cost to have done at a repair shop?

Thanks

so how do i tell if its the main seal by cleaning the drivers side? wont it leak down through the bell housing then out the bottom?? im lost

Rear seal leak

I live near Philadelphia in New Jersey. Would a Ford dealer be the place to go, or does anyone have another suggestion?

Thanks

Mudding... It should leak out the small oblong hole in the bottom of the bell housing. That is where dust and such are supposed to fall out. So if you have oil coming out of there then you've got a RMS leak.
