Rear gear choices?

Of course you just got to know where to look. Obviously since the last administrations brilliant idea of cash for clunkers those day will take another 10 years to return. But ive paid 50 bucks for cars before and even traded firewood for a truck. And coal another time.

i made money on my diesel swap.

There is no way to disprove the existence of interdimensional vampires...

I run a toploader 4-speed in my 2wd 302 truck. This truck is a daily driver. I currently use my stock 7.5 with 3.73 gears and it just feels like too much gear. I have an 8.8 with 3.08 gears and a 4.10 gear set I was going to have swapped out. Ten years ago I'd of went with the 4.10 or more but now I'm not so sure. Gas mileage is usually between 12-15 mpg depending on how I drive it, so usually about 12. Just cruising around the truck is pretty wound up and if I get on the interstate it's almost unbearable. I'm sure a taller tire would help but I have basically new 225/60-15s on the back. What are some of y'alls trans and gear combos? How do you like them?
Try the 3.08s. then realize you need more first gear. Then swap in a T5. If you'd get your cruise RPM to ~1900@65 MPH, assuming a mild cam, you can get your MPG to mid-20s at 65 MPH. Lower it and add a hard tonneau (plywood) if you want more MPG.

How did people run .............back in the day ? Because that's all there was at the time . There wasn't any choice . It was normal to us . We were unaware that there would be better in the future . It was simply a fact of life that you could have either a deep first gear, or modest cruise rpm , but not both . 12-15mpg is within the ball park for non-OD 3.73, V-8 .

If you went to the effort to swap a V-8 , and imply a heavy foot ,you want a certain level of power . If high milage was your primary concern , you'd run something like a 3.0 .

I'm an old school guy , with more than occasional Luddite tendencies . ( insert tales of Full Size Bronco w/ 351, C-6, 3.55 , and Chev C-10 , 350 , SM465, and Carb ! ) . But even * I * , finally realized that OD is needed for anything with umph , and late 20th century expectations of cruise rpms . ( FSB had 3000rpm cruise , my last several DD Explorers had 1900-2000 .)

Back on topic , back in the day , " compromise " ratios included 3.42, 3.55, and 3.73 . Would 3.55 to increase 1mpg satisfy you / seem like meaningful return on efforts ? Would 2mpg increase w/ 3.42 be acceptable *to you* trade off for the reduced power ?

easy to do..he has the 308 axle.....bolt it in and try it...dont even hook the brakes up....cap em and take the hour to swap it....see how it feels. feels good hook it all up and be happy...dont like it...

well..... then your fawked.

running a tiny tire and a four speed i think he will have plenty of 1st gear.

Last post was in 2014 and I've never seen you post anything about your truck in the last year or two. That's why I mentioned it.

He went out to get a pack of smokes and vanished for a year or two. My dad did it. Your dad did it.

Happens, man.

My dad never did. He always kept about 20 cartons of no brand name black-n-white cigs around that just said "20 class A cigarettes"

That was 22 years ago... I knew something was up because he quit smoking 10 years before he "went to get a pack of smokes".

well. if you read it...you know i got donor for free/trade labor(minor). scrapped it for 600 bux

so that is how i made money on my engine swap.

and kept making it.

if i kept a 302/351....i would have needed to regear the dana 60's eventually to use 37 inch tires for daily use. with diesel they are fine.

feeding a small block with lift and 37 inch tires is not cost effective.

feeding a slobbering nutless pig a mixture of oil and diesel or gas/oil is cost effective.

its so effective.....i never post anything about it.

because its so effective.

success is what i call that.

the dog likes riding in it too.
