Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and site. I have a 1990 Ranger 4X4 extend cab automatic transmission truck. I have done extensive work to this truck to include swapping the interior, rebuilding the transmission and replacing the rusted styleside body with a flareside body. I love this little truck and have now found that the rear makes horrendous noise, I have appropriated another truck a 1989 4X4 with standard transmission. My question is can I swap the rears right out,are the ratios and size the same ? Thanks for your help.

You can swap them out but make sure the front and rear gears match or 4 wheel drive afterwords well chew itself up. Check the tech library and there is a reference for finding out your gears. There is no year and model standard so they always vary.

Edit; killjoy beat me...
You would have to make sure the ratio is the same as what your truck has originally, the rear has to match the front. Personally, I would use the 89 if the gears match. I'm no expert on swaps tho.
Good luck,

Richard

I found out today that my truck axle code is 86,which means I have a 7.5 with 3.73 gears, the truck I took the rear out of is code 87 which means it is 7.5 with a 4.10 gear ratio. I am now in the market for another rear.
