I've got a 94 ranger 4x4 w/ a dana 35 7.5 open diff w/ 3.73 gears... its got a hard grinding knock every two or three tire rotations... never messed with rear ends and have no idea what to look into... ideas would be greatly appreciated THanks

You have a bad bearing in the rearend. They are easy to change and pretty straight forward. As long as you are just changing out the bearings you will be fine. Just remember to put the shims back where you took them from.

a "knock" I'd be looking for a dammaged tooth on the ring gear.

a carrier bearing is a "rumble" like an axle shaft bearing
a pinion bearing makes a whistle like the back ground noise
from a helicopter traffic reporter.
