Hey my rear end just went out and I need to get a new one so I'm just wondering what all I need to get. Do I just need the ring and pinion set and if so can I install that myself or do I need to take it somewhere and have it done professionally?

Ok so it hasn't gone all the way out, I drove it home but it is making a horrible clunking noise and i jumps really bad in 1st gear. When I was driving home I had to baby it up to 2nd and couldnt get it to not clunk in
3rd so I had to keep it in 2nd all the way home. If I got to about 30 in 2nd gear and went real easy on the gas it wouldnt make very much noise. As of now it is still mobile but only with the horrible clunking noise, so its only gonna be able to move around the yard for now.

Ok well I'm just gonna wait until tomorrow so I can check everything out, thanks a lot for the help guys!!

more details would be helpful, what do you mean went out??? odds are it will be cheaper and easier to just buy a rear end out of a junkyard and stick it in

Yeah what exactly happened?
installing a ring and pinion isnt quite as easy as it sounds.

your best option would be to find an axle with the same gear ratio your truck has and swap it in.

make sure it's your rear end first, sounds like there could be a tranny problem

I'd look at the U-Joints and Trans before I dug into the rear end.

+1. Generally rear axles don't care what gear you're in.

+2... is it manual or auto?

just jiggle it a lil (no joke. i had a 74 f250 that when i put it in drive it wouldnt go so, i threw that sucker in nutreal and rocked her back and fourth then got back in started her up put her in drive and BOOM!!!) p.s. never put a truck in park while its still moving. lol

Edit: just saw your edit... its your tranny. its goin to s**t. sorry :(
