Rear End Clarification
Hello fellows. wonder if some of you guys could clear something up for me. I've read alot on here and just want to make sure I'm understand correctly what I'm reading. I have an 04 ranger edge 4x4 4.0 with 140K miles. I noticed a spot of oil under my pig and found that the cover was leaking. Figured I would change the gear oil and re-seal the cover hopefully. The sticker on the door says my rear end is a 97 which by looking it up means its an 8.8 open with a 4.10 gear ratio. Correct so far right? I read that for now recommends a 75 to 140 gear oil. Is this correct?
How much should I buy?
What is a good gear oil at a reasonable price?

Also. is there a place here where I can view or download TSB's?
Thank You for any input!

I'd get 3 or 4 quarts. 3 should be enough, 4 is just insurance.

Sad fact is gear lube is expensive. 80-90 isn't bad, but 75-140, which is what your axle takes, is about $20 a quart for anything worth having. Doesn't really matter where you get it it's expensive. I think around here the dealer is the best price. I think it goes for $25-30 or more at the parts stores. Just shop around.

Thanks for the info, Is it true that Ford changed the spec from 80-90 to 75-140? Was there a TSB on this? Thank you!

I bought 3 quarts of 75-140 Purple and a gasket. Will do this weekend. Thanks!
