Rear Differential Question

I just took a 3.73 crosspin out the other day....:icon_confused:

Came right out. (it was not a notched pin, BTW)
On a 7.5?

Do yourself a favor, get a dremel with a sanding bit, grind down the tooth that's in the way just enough to remove it, that way you can put a full pin in instead of the notched pin that broke. Grinding down the tooth doesn't hurt anything.

You mentioned the 3.73 gear, what size axle, even some 3.0L's 4x2's came with the 8.8. Still don't see the problem getting that shaft/pin out. I've removed mine out of a 4.10 8.8 but is the construction that much difference between the 7.5 and the 8.8?
"Pumpkin" should only refer to the removable center sections found on the 8-9" rear ends, came out from the front of the axle housing. Orginally they were painted an orange/red primer, hince the name Pumpkin. Is the pin/shaft you are talking about the one in the drawing below? Pardon the other stuff, that's what the PowerTrax looks like.

Anything 3.73 and numerically higher on the 7.5 and you can't remove the cross-pin, the ring gear is too thick. On the 8.8 it doesn't become a problem until 4.56 and numerically higher.

Thanks, going in the memory bank, never had to deal with a 7.5, other than pulling mine this month. If it's that much trouble, I'd find a replacement in a JY.
Dave - did that drawing this Winter when I was bored, employment chalanged (SP)

Any 4.0 ranger will have a rear axle that'll bolt right in.

But to be the right width as your 1998? truck it'll need to be from a 1993-up.

Ok, so i go everything figured out. Truck is back together. Im gonna explain this for anyone who might be having the same problem. (since thats what forums are for).

On the 3.73 7.5 rear ends the Spider gear pin will ONLY come out half way. Just enough to get the axle clips off. I had to take mine to a ford dealer to have them take off the Ring gear so that the new pin can go back on.

In other words... its a huge pain in the ass and in my opinion a design flaw.

Thanks to everyone for the help

an 8.8" that'll fit your truck directly?

Look for a 1993-up 8.8" ranger anything else won't fit directly.

A Dremel tool used as described in my previous post fixes that design flaw... You could have saved yourself some money and you wouldn't have to run a weak notched pin that you've already broke before...

Call me crazy, but i dont like taking dremels to key drivetrain parts. Mayb if this truck wasnt my DD i would have tried it. But no offense to you in any way, but i dont know who you are and have no clue about your experience so i decided to spend the money and have it done the right way.

It's a common practice, many people here including myself have done it. I did it on my 7.5 and 8.8 (4.56 and numerically higher on 8.8s is when the ring gear starts to interfere). It sounds crazy but the part removed isn't in the contact pattern.
This will give you an Idea how little tooth is removed.

I see what your saying. I just didnt feel comfortable doing it. Now, if this pin breaks on me then i will be breaking out the dremel.
