Whats the rated bumper capacity of a 1st gen? I think 1500 but i cant remember.

I think it is stamped on it.

I thought mine did, must have had my trucks confused.

My ‘85 manual says trailer towing package above 2k.

Mines still good and solid, i jumped my 300lb ass on it and thats how we drug the truck around when it wasnt running. Mounts are great still, so it should be ok with my 800lb trl with my 700lb sportsman on it. Cant see the point in feeding my 460 when i dont have to lol

Over 1k trailer brakes are recommended.

add weights in 20 lb increments. when bumper fails, count the 20 lb weights and multiply by 20. replace bumper and only put the amount of weights minus 1 or 2 in the future

:p

When i first read this at 130am, half asleep, i thuught you were serious :icon_twisted:

Im not to worried bout the brakes, i got a 5sp :icon_thumby:

Nah, ill hitch it up and run it on some backroads, my colorado used to stop my 6x6 on the same trailer just fine. The 6x6 actually was a might bit heavier then the quad. Plus the colorados brakes wernt any bigger then the ranger IIRC, and ran discs/drums. I used to tow much heavier loads with rusty#1 on the bumper before i knew better, but just wanted an idea if i should get a reese or not.

I know NOTHING about towing a trailer, but I'm going to take a stab at this anyway. Bumper capacity isn't what you're looking for, really. You want HITCH capacity, which is dependent on the class of hitch.

So, what class of hitch do we have, when we put a ball in the hole on our back bumper? I think Gen1 and Gen2 are the same class bumper hitch (or maybe ALL bumper hitches are the same class?). I just looked in my 1990 owner's manual. It does say that the step bumper is a class one hitch, maximum trailer weight is 2,000 pounds, tongue weight is 200 pounds. In the 1990 manual that's on page 132.
