Rear brakes click

I have a 92 Ranger XLT with a 2.3 and 5-speed. Whenever I'm at a stop and I release the brake pedal a loud click (like when metal hits together and goes "clink") comes from the rear wheels. I've never had a vehicle that did this before. It stops and starts just fine. Is this normal?

Edit: it was inspected recently so I doubt the shoes are bad...

There's several things that could be making clicking noises but not be bad.


The shoes could be catching on the backing plate as the pressure on the wheel cylinder is being released... The cable could be in a bind and causing the star wheel and adjuster to be noisy... The springs could have been put in wrong and they're binding a bit when the shoes snap back in place... The things that physically hold the shoes TO the backing plate could be shifting a bit and causing noise... The piston in the wheel cylinder could be sticking as it goes back in, and it stays that way until the fluid pressure is low enough that the spring could force the shoe back in place. The last one would cause the loudest "clink" out of all those reasons.


They'd really have to be checked thoroughly by someone who's done brakes ALOT.


I had to learn my entire brake system last year without help. It sucks when you're in that situation.

[The funny thing is, is that not even a month after that incident I had got swapped shops in my job in the military. I started working on and repairing MHU-110 trailers for the Air Force. Those trailers have the same brake setup as Ford. (Half of the parts on them were stamped with the Ford oval anyways.)]
