Both sides of my '98 ranger rear axles have some in and out play when I grab the sides of rear tire and pull & push. Is this a sign that something is wrong or is this normal?

Up to about 1/8" in/out is normal (no up/down or side/side though). If it's beyond that, you may want to replace the clutches in your limited slip diff.
