I am not sure if it is called End Play or not.

While trying to check brakes and removing the rear drum, I notice that the axle can be moved in and out about 3/4 of an inch.

Any comments on this issue would be most appreciated.

does it have a limited slip axle? if so, the clutches are toast, you probably want to get on replacing them before a C clip falls out

1/16" or so is normal

Limited Slip ?

Not sure as I just bought it. It sure doesn't act like a LS but how do you tell without ripping it apart

put it in nuetral and jack up the rear end. if it is a lsd both wheels should rotate in the same direction when you spin a wheel, if they spin different directions you got an open diff.

i dont know if this is true for every lsd but the tag on my axle says 3L73. im assuming that the L stands for limited slip. i could be wrong. does anyone elses lsd have this L in the gear ratio on their axle tag?

yep, that's the notation on the tag for limited slip, one of the 2 ways to find out if an axle has a limited slip without pulling the cover. (the tag and door sticker), on the door sticker the axles with a limited slip will have a letter as the first digit in the axle code while the open will have two numbers
