Is there an age or mileage they they typically go bad or can it happen at any time?

I'd say it's random... Why does it matter though? It's a $15 part and it takes 2 minutes to replace... I don't see any sense in worrying about it too much... When it goes out... Replace...

Agreed, seems random.

The one in my '99 Explorer 8.8" crapped out with probably less than 70,000 miles on the axle (showed an open circuit). I replaced it with the one out of a 140,000 mile '90 7.5" I've had laying around here and it's still going fine.

my '03 only has 46K. I was doing a 360 turn in a lightly snow covered empty parking lot then the abs light came on, I shut the truck off then restarted and the light didn't come back on. Also, I'm aware that's only about $20 for a new sensor and easy to replace.

Its no big deal. you had too much wheelspin and it got confused. happens to me all the time in sand.
