Sup Guys!

So, As I'm Driving my 89 XLT 5 SPD, I notice that just above the transmission (the floorboard) where the shifter boot, carpet and underneath the seat - Just down the middle of the cabin, it gets SUPER HOT. I mean, the carpet heats up, the bottom of the seat where the 60/40 begins (underneath the armrest).

I mean, I can feel the heat at least 1 ft below from where the shift knob is at.

Is this normal? is it supposed to get this hot?

exhaust leak? overheating transmission? WTF?

any thoughts?

thanks,

-dave

Are your heat shields on the catalytic converter, muffler, and under the cab? There should be one under the passenger side of the cab. Most of the ones i have seen start to crack off and vibrate so people pop them off.

That is just about normal....if you look at it your engines heat is pretty much channeled through the trans tunnel with the force of all the air coming in through the front of the truck while your moving at speed, as well as the overall temperature of the transmission, which gets warm being bolted to the engine and all the bearings and gears spinning on the inside. You should have a foam kinda barrier under the boot on top of the tranny around where the shifter mounts in the trans. That keeps the bulk of the heat out. If so and its really that hot, I agree check the condition of your catalytic converter make sure the shields are up and shes not blocked and running hotter than usual.

i dont have those heat shields and i dont recall it getting that hot i can feel it if i put my hand on the passenger side floor board but thats it

I"ll check if the heat shields are ok. I assume a local auto parts store carries it?
