I am looking to do the V8 swap from a 99-01 ford explorer into my 01 Ranger. The question comes in that if I want to do the Trick Flow twisted wedge top end kit and a vortech supercharger as well as pistons and rods, is the 5.0 from the explorer comparable to the 5.0 from the 86-95 mustang 5.0? I know that wiring and some small stuff are different but as far as pistons, rods and top end build kit and fitting a vortech supercharger, will that work regardless of what 5.0 i use?

Same basic motor with sight difference you mentioned. Mustangs had forged piston thru '92'. Front dress different so don't know how that would affect mounting the SC. One member who's done the SC and is featured up top with picture, has a good page on his total swap.

You need a forged bottom end, girdle the explorer block.
