I just changed my timing belt last night. before i took the old one off i marked on the cam sprocket across onto the timing belt and then made a different mark on the crank sprocket onto the timing belt. then once i got the old one off i layed it over the new one and made the two marks on it. All my pulleys were aligned with the right symbols but as i was putting the belt on the pulleys moved a little and i ended up having to turn them back around to their top dead center symbols. i made sure they were lined up and that my two marking lined up with the marking i made on the cam and crank. Then i manually turned the engine over a few times to listen for valve and piston contact and heard nothing. so i started the engine and it immediately was making a clattering noise so after about 4 seconds i shut it off. I left the truck at my works shop and when i got home i started web browsing. i read that these 2.5's are non interference engines so they wont bend valves. so if thats true then what could the clattering be? i also read on another site that sometimes the lifters will tap for a bit since rotating the assembly lets oil out of the heads and i should let it run for a few minutes.

They are a

Non-interference motor could the tapping be detonation? Belt maybe a tooth off? :dunno:

I had an experience with the belt jumping time with a Escort. Might want to check and see if the marks still line up. The car was taken to a trusted mechanic and he said that the tensioner needed to leveraged into the belt even though the instructions say not to. He aligned the timing marks and did that and the car was fine.

Well i went and started it this morning and sure enough the noise went away after a few seconds. There was just no oil in the head after rotation the engine so many time. the truck drives just as good as it did before but now at an idle it feels like it may be idling a lil too low or something. its very slight and theres no popping or anything. i may just be being paranoid because it very slight and ive looked up videos of skipped tooth timing belts and it doesnt sound anything like that. do i just need to give the timing belt time to settle in or something?

And also some power steering fluid leaked out when i had the assembly moved out of the way and its making noise and idling rough wheen i turn the wheels. i checked the fluid and its still in spec but it looks like chocolate milk. looks real bad. could this be causin the slight difference in idle?

PS fluid would not cause the idle difference. It may need to be changed, but it won't cause idle differences. Chocolate color is not good in PS fluid. Should be red.

The PS pump MAY cause idle differences if it is on the way out (getting hard to turn).

Where did the fluid leak from? If it came from either hose, there is probably air being sucked into the system. That would cause noise and turning issues.

I believe it may have came right out of the top while i had it on its side. i had to get kinda rough with it a few times so i could get the timing cover off and on. ive only had the truck for about a week. its not the one in my pic. its a 99 ext cab 2.5 manual. but i never had the issues until after the belt change and i had to be real rough with the ps assembly. And the only reason i dont think it the timing belt is cuz the car runs great running down the road, no misses or anything. but when its at an idle it just feels almost like the ac compressor is on or something and when i turn the wheels at a stop its crappy.

did you align the third pulley? on a '94 (only California '94's) or newer that pulley is important also since the cam sensor is driven off of it.

i was thinking about that yesterday. i remember i had all the marks lined up but on that oil pump sprocket the diamonds werent exactly point to point. it could possibly have been turned one tooth clockwise, but that was the only way i could get all my other marks to be exact and for the belt to be on. what are symptoms of that being off a tooth? and wouldnt it throw a check engine light since my cam sensor runs off of it?

im gonna start a new thread since my current issue has nothing to do with the title
