Okay, I feel stupid for asking but I give up.

88' 2.9l

Where is this mysterious connector for the self test checks?

I have two connectors hanging under the dash above the transmission hump. Neither one look anything like the diagram in the tech section.

Am I blind? :)
 
Nope. You have OBD-I. It's not under the steering wheel.

Most RBVs of that generation have it near the airbox.
 
Am I still even looking for this connector?

Yep, that's the connector. I don't know for sure on the 89. My 84 and 86's were on the passenger side fender, my '94 is on the drivers side fender.
 
Found it. Towards the rear of the pass side inner fender. Theres a grey housing mounted to the fender marked EEC TEST. They are clipped up under that.

Mine was red in color.
