re wiring

long story short here in Florida, truck got hit by lightning. Go figure. So i decided to check it out. toasted the alt. had to change it. few weeks later smelled a electrical burning smell, pulled the radio, ( previous owner did hack job) sure enough melted and fused wires. So with this in mind i decided to finally pull the heater core pull the dash and finally prep my truck for the cage. Now time for basic re wiring. I pulled everything out of this truck now im stuck with a jumbled mess of wires. I want to keep the basic electrical system fuel pump, ignition brake lights etc. now im trying to slim down the stock wiring harness, but i have a hard time following my chilton , can anyone please help me get this done, or advice me what wires i need to keep , or is there a color coded system that tell mes what wire is what color and does what function. i looked everywhere today. on ranger station the inter web tried to find it on here. no luck. my switch board im planning on making has a master on/off, the fuel on/off , the ign on/off, the main stock head lights, a 3 way blinker switch my kc lights the rear ambers and reverse lights.

I found the Ford factory wiring diagrams on Ebay for $20. Easily worth five times that because it is about 175 pages and shows every wire and connector with locations for every part.
