I think the biggest thing with illegal drugs is the fact that there is a LOT of money involved - more than enough to buy off most people that would get in your way. I remember a few years back - and it was an incident that was hushed up really well - a border crossing decided to check a semi that was coming across. No real reason, all the paperwork was in order and the driver said all the right things, it was just a random decision to spot check it. Except it was packed full of drugs. Well, the border guards threw the guy in jail, notified their superiors, and then called the local news station. By the time the local news got there, the semi and the driver had gone missing. Seems someone higher up on the food chain sent a quiet little missive down the ladder to let them go and keep your mouth shut.
I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but think about it, think about how much money is involved. And think of how easy it is to smuggle things across the borders of both the U.S. and Canada. Those stupid fences that our government keeps insisting on putting up on the Mexican border are a joke. Secure that border and a lot of the drugs will stop coming across. Sure, there will always be a trickle that you can't do much about, but it'll stop a significant amount. And allow the Coast Guard to fire on suspected smuggling ships if they refuse to heave to. Same goes for suspected drug flights. That'll shut off a big tap. Then do something about the country club jails we got. I don't fully agree with everything that Joe Arpio (sp?) believes in, but I do like his ideas on prison. It should not be an experience you would like to repeat.
And to those who will say something about needing more manpower for the border, I have an idea.... Impose a flat tax (income tax) then take all the IRS agents you don't need, give them a loaded gun and stick them on the border. They should be mad enough about losing their cushy job that they'll want to shoot anything that moves for a couple weeks, lol.
